The
Sanxingdui Museum, located at Guanghan 40km from Chengdu, is recognized
as the most important ancient remains of the Sichuan region for its vast
size, long lasting period and enriched cultural contents. The site was
ranked by the State Council of PRC among the Top National Culture-Preservatory
Bases in January 1988.
The Sanxing dui Museum sits in the river-sided space northeast of the
site. It started, as scheduled, to be built in August 1992 and completed
for being open to public in May 1997. The Museum, including auxiliary
facilities, covers approx. 80,000 sq.m, of which an area of 7,000 sq.m
serves as an exhibition centre, and it comes to be one of major historical
museums in China.
The building of the Museum freely blends primitive artistic style with
modern vogues. Architecturally a full use of curve and are elements symbolizes
the mound-like remains of Sanxingdui, yellow-coloured outer walls representing
the earth, and the arch-rising building like the site-mound with a soaring
steeple as its grotesque roof.
The exhibition hall of the Museum, with the coverage of some 4,000sq.m,
serves as the key place for the display of the Ancient Shu (Sichuan) Culture
centered on the Sanxingdui findings. The rich exhibits are grouped into
four units as follows:
A. Splendor of Ancient Shu Culture
It offers an overall intruduction to a history of ancient Sichuan as well
as brilliant achievements made by the old Sanxingdui-based Shu State in
various fields.
B. Mystery of the Primitive Faith
Artifacta and relics on display, supported by other techniques, are used
to form a series of panoramic view, plus a simulated show of that day
real life, thus interpreting the political/social quality of the Sanxingdui's
town-state, and revealing the psyches/mores of ancient Shu people.
C. Exquisite Cultural Artifacts
The choice out of the excavated artifacts by thousands are on display
here, including ten-odd pieces/sets of rare relics which are supposed
to be of special value of cultural legacy.
D. Sanxingdui: Excavation and Study
Over last decades, several generations of archaeologists have been engaged
in a painstaking work in succession on the Sanxingdui site, this unit
is an informative unfolding of the archaeological progress at the site.
Also some related aspects, such as the influence of the archaeology of
Sanxingdui overseas, the cultural significance and the current progress
of the study are under scrutiny.
The exhibition is a bold attempt in design and diversified means of expression
and an elaborated composition are fully employed, in order to better both
the display of content of relics and our understanding of their cultural
value. Visitors are easily expected to deepen the knowledge of Chinese
history as well as of national treasure of culture.
The Museum is under an advanced operation, equiped with a central air-conditioned
system, a multi-function lighting installation, fireproof and monitoring
devices. A computer-controlled unit is used for mangement.
The surroundings of the Museum have turned out to be a perfect lay-out
for cultural purpose. Here one can see a large altar for the show of old
sacrificial rites, a huge arena for theatrical festives, an elegant view
of the lake and rockery, and old-fashioned group of minor buildings. Among
the attached services are the convenience of board, recreation and a children's
playground. The cultural complex gives a marvellous chance for a visitor
to enjoy the beauty of the Sichuan gardern-like park while appreciating
the relics unearthed at Sanxingdui. Welcome to the Museum and you are
invited to get access to the mysterious world of Sanxingdui.
